Prior to the establishment of the new mission at Peterhead, the Scottish Catholic Directory in 1848 records that Peterhead was one of the six principal stations of the mission of Strichen.

Letters of 21 July 1844 and 18 February 1845 to Bishop Kyle at Preshome requesting a priest, the former during the fishing season.  In 1851, the Directory notes that the Peterhead mission was opened on Easter Sunday 4^th April 1847.  Until the chapel was ready, Mass was being celebrated in Catto’s Hall, Broad Street.  Rev William Loggie was the Parish Priest from 1847 – 1853.

The Scottish Catholic Directory for 1852, has a brief entry, noting that a chapel was solemnly blessed and opened, by Right Rev Dr  Kyle, on Thursday 22 May 1851.   The building could seat about 200 persons and was in the Gothic style.   A commodious chapel house was attached.
