{"id":419,"date":"2017-07-04T14:28:02","date_gmt":"2017-07-04T13:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterfraserparish.rcda.scot\/?page_id=419"},"modified":"2026-01-20T17:52:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T17:52:13","slug":"st-marys-church","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/peterfraserparish.rcda.scot\/?page_id=419","title":{"rendered":"St. Mary&#8217;s Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9351\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9352\" style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Prior to the establishment of the new mission at Peterhead, the Scottish Catholic Directory in 1848 records that Peterhead was one of the six principal stations of the mission of Strichen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9356\">L<\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9357\">etters of <span class=\"__postbox-detected-content __postbox-detected-date\">21 July 1844<\/span> and <span class=\"__postbox-detected-content __postbox-detected-date\">18 February 1845<\/span> to Bishop Kyle at Preshome requesting a priest, the former during the fishing season.\u00a0 In 1851, the Directory notes that the Peterhead mission was opened on Easter <span class=\"__postbox-detected-content __postbox-detected-date\">Sunday<\/span><\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9358\">4<sup id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9359\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9360\">th<\/span><\/sup><span class=\"__postbox-detected-content __postbox-detected-date\">April <span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9361\">1847.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9361\">Until the chapel<\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9362\"> was<\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9363\"> ready, Mass was being celebrated in Catto\u2019s Hall, Broad Street.\u00a0 Rev William Loggie was the Parish Priest from 1847 &#8211; 1853.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9235\" style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1499103580121_9367\">The Scottish Catholic Directory for 1852, has a brief entry, noting that a chapel was solemnly blessed and opened, by Right Rev Dr\u00a0 <span class=\"__postbox-detected-content __postbox-detected-date\">Kyle, on Thursday 22 May 1851.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 The building could seat about 200 persons and was in the Gothic style.\u00a0\u00a0 A commodious chapel house was attached.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prior to the establishment of the new mission at Peterhead, the Scottish Catholic Directory in 1848 records that Peterhead was one of the six principal stations of the mission of Strichen.
